Isaiah tells us what that represents in Verse 7: For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, a cry! Remember that earlier in the passage our Lord had said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments," (John 14:15 RSV). That is the Father's pruning knife cutting off the sucker shoots of the old life within us, so that we might produce more of the Christlikeness, the fruit of the Spirit. Maybe the master was trying to keep the unemployment rate low during that time. He not only does this, but he does it repeatedly. Then God the Father sent His only Son. We expect that those who work harder and longer will receive a greater reward than those who do not. Many people have a problem with this. There is an activity which is to be done, and a passivity which is to be acknowledged -- an active voice and a passive voice. The person might have never addressed hundreds or thousands of individuals like some ministers and evangelists do, yet they loyally brought up their youngsters, and possibly those kids became teachers who served God on unfamiliar soil or someplace within their own country. This is the point our Lord makes in the story. If you do not know the Master of the vineyard, Jesus Christ, you can know Him today. Those are the ones which arise out of our evil nature, our fallen Adamic nature, which produces in us those characteristics which are different than the fruit of the Spirit -- resentment, anger, bitterness, selfishness, egocentricity, love of praise -- these qualities which tend to arise within us so frequently. In the first 13 verses of chapter 20 of the Book of Matthew, Jesus is telling the parable about workers being paid equally. (LogOut/ But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. As leaders, they should have been leading the people to Him. He says, "Now, it may seem strange to you that I should ask that last question. On others you see luscious, tempting, delicious fruit which gladdens and delights your heart, glorifies you, and we thank you for that. When we think of its size, how few workers there are! When we read this parable we are probably struck by the perceived unfairness of the master toward those who had worked the longest. Aside from the first group of workers who were hired at sun up, the master promises to pay the workers what is right. These workers might have expected to receive a fraction of a days wage, but the master of the vineyard never specifies what he will pay. On the other hand, if you let him take all the responsibility and you make no choices at all, if you depend on him to do everything including making the choices, you will also have a fruitless life. There are a couple things to note in this story, I think. Several times, he found people standing idle in the marketplace, which may just mean that were unemployed, not that they were lazy. God sent prophets to Israel to tell them to get right with God, but they were ignored, beaten, and/or killed. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Note in verses 4 and 7 that He sent them out. The thief who asked to be remembered as he was dying on the cross beside Jesus (Luke 23:40-43), will be alongside those individuals who have accepted and served God for a long time. Fruit, here, is that which is produced by the vine and is the natural outflow of the life of the vine. Probably they will respect him when they see him. But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my names sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
